Customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad have seized gold worth approximately ₹4.26 crore from an IndiGo flight that arrived from Dubai. The recovery was made during a detailed inspection of flight 6E-1478 after officers received specific inputs and decided to conduct a thorough search of the aircraft.
With the assistance of aircraft engineers, customs officers inspected the front lavatory of the aircraft and discovered two pouches wrapped in black plastic tape hidden inside a wall-mounted speaker box. After dismantling the unit, authorities recovered 24 foreign-origin gold biscuits weighing 2,799.3 grams and having a purity of 999.0.
Officials said the sophisticated concealment method suggests a planned smuggling attempt. Investigators suspect the gold may have been intended for collection by an accomplice after the aircraft landed, allowing it to bypass routine passenger screening procedures.
Since no individual came forward to claim ownership of the gold, the consignment was seized as unclaimed under the Customs Act, 1962. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to identify those involved and uncover the smuggling network behind the operation.
