Stand-up comedian Pranit More has issued a second public apology following the controversy surrounding remarks made during a live comedy show that sparked widespread criticism across social media platforms. The comedian admitted that he made a serious error in judgment by failing to object to comments made by an audience member during a crowd interaction segment of his performance.
The controversy began during a show in Gurugram when a web developer named Himanshu Jangra shared an incident involving a date and a plate of chicken biryani worth Rs 370. During the interaction, comments made by the audience member were widely criticised online for appearing to justify inappropriate expectations in return for money spent during the outing. A video clip from the event quickly went viral and triggered a wave of backlash.
Responding to the criticism, Pranit More acknowledged that he should have intervened immediately instead of laughing along with the crowd. In his latest statement, he said he deserved the criticism directed at him and admitted that giving a platform to such remarks allowed the situation to escalate further. He also expressed regret to those who felt offended and requested an opportunity to learn from the incident.
The matter has now attracted the attention of several authorities. The National Commission for Women has summoned both Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra, stating that the comments and conduct reflected in the viral clip appeared to normalise behaviour that undermines the principles of consent and respect. The commission is expected to review the matter further.
The controversy expanded after another clip from the same event surfaced online. The video featured remarks made by a medical student regarding cadavers used in medical education, leading to additional criticism from healthcare professionals and educational institutions. The student later issued an apology, while authorities launched inquiries into the matter.
Officials and public figures have also weighed in on the debate. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde stressed that entertainment should not cross ethical boundaries, while Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that freedom of expression must not come at the expense of another person's dignity. He emphasized that comedians and content creators should remain mindful of the impact their words can have on society.
As discussions continue about the limits of comedy and free speech, the incident has reignited a broader national conversation about accountability in entertainment. While Pranit More has pledged to improve and reflect on his actions, the controversy remains a significant example of how digital audiences increasingly expect public figures to exercise responsibility both on stage and online.
