Oman Promotes Blood Donation To Save Lives

Post by : Shakul

The Sultanate of Oman is reinforcing the importance of blood donation as one of the most meaningful humanitarian acts that can save lives and strengthen the healthcare system. As the country joins the global celebration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, health authorities are encouraging citizens and residents to embrace regular voluntary blood donation as a social responsibility and a vital contribution to public health.

Blood Donations Rise Significantly

According to Dr. Khalid bin Saeed Al Habsi, Senior Consultant Hematologist and Head of the Blood Bank Services Department, Oman has witnessed remarkable growth in community awareness regarding blood donation. Blood collection at the Bausher Blood Bank increased from 28,613 units in 2020 to 42,023 units in 2025, representing a 47 percent rise. Officials attribute this achievement to continuous awareness campaigns and growing public participation.

Regular Donors Play Critical Role

Health officials emphasized that regular donors are essential for maintaining a stable blood supply, especially during emergencies. Oman currently has many dedicated donors who have donated more than 50 times, while some individuals have reached nearly 300 donations. These donors are often the first to respond during urgent situations and provide a reliable source of safe blood for patients in need.

Growing Demand Across Hospitals

The demand for blood remains consistently high throughout the Sultanate. Blood Bank Services in Bausher alone provide more than 4,000 units of blood every month, averaging around 140 units daily. These supplies support hospitals, emergency departments, surgical procedures, accident victims, cancer patients, and individuals suffering from hereditary blood disorders such as thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

Challenges In Maintaining Blood Stocks

Despite the positive growth in donations, officials noted several challenges in maintaining strategic blood reserves. Donations typically decline during public holidays, the summer season and the holy month of Ramadan. To address these challenges, authorities organize additional donation campaigns, communicate directly with donors and closely monitor blood inventories to ensure hospitals remain fully supplied.

Advanced Safety Standards And Technology

Oman's blood banking system follows strict safety protocols to protect both donors and patients. Every donor undergoes medical screening before donation, while all blood units are tested for diseases including hepatitis, HIV, malaria and syphilis. Advanced DNA testing technology is also used to ensure the highest standards of blood safety. Modern digital systems help track donor records, manage inventories and coordinate emergency blood requests efficiently.

Future Plans To Expand Donor Participation

Health authorities are preparing to launch a smart mobile application that will allow donors to locate nearby donation centers, view their donation history and schedule appointments easily. Officials believe this initiative will encourage more people to become regular donors and help establish a sustainable culture of blood donation throughout the year. As Oman celebrates World Blood Donor Day, healthcare leaders continue to remind the public that a single blood donation can save multiple lives and offer hope to countless families.
