EU Prolongs Syria Sanctions Until 2027

Post by : Shakul

The European Union has confirmed the extension of sanctions against individuals and entities connected to the former Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, until June 1, 2027. This decision follows the EU's annual review of its sanctions pertaining to Syria.

Simultaneously, the European Council disclosed the delisting of seven Syrian entities from its sanctions list, which includes the nation's defense and interior ministries. This action reflects the EU’s intention to moderate certain restrictions on Damascus in light of recent political changes in the country.

According to EU officials, the sanctions will still target associates of the former Assad administration, imposing asset freezes and travel bans on those listed. Furthermore, European citizens and businesses are barred from offering financial aid to these individuals.

European leaders have voiced that the delisting of several entities aims to foster engagement with Syria post-Bashar al-Assad's regime collapse at the end of 2024. The newly appointed President Ahmed al-Sharaa is pursuing international support for Syria's reconstruction efforts.

The Syrian foreign ministry has welcomed the lifting of sanctions on the seven entities, claiming it will aid in recovery and bolster state institutions, contributing to nationwide stability.

However, Syrian officials also endorse the continued sanctions on persons associated with the former regime, particularly those implicated in civilian violations during the past conflict.

The EU had previously lifted many economic sanctions on Syria in May 2025 but maintained restrictions on ex-regime members and security-related groups. Officials believe that remnants of the old regime continue to exert influence, potentially threatening Syria’s political evolution and reconciliation efforts.
