The highly anticipated film “Paper Tiger,” directed by James Gray, has become a highlight at the Cannes Film Festival, showcasing Miles Teller’s emotionally charged and mature portrayal of a family man.
Debuting at Cannes this past weekend, “Paper Tiger” has drawn significant attention from both critics and viewers. This film is notably one of just two American contenders vying for the coveted Palme d’Or this year.
In this gripping narrative, Miles Teller takes on the role of Irwin Pearl, a dedicated father residing in New York during the 1980s alongside his wife and children. The plot unfolds as Irwin’s brother gets embroiled in a perilous project linked to the Gowanus Canal cleanup, leading to menacing threats from the Russian mafia and increasing strain on the family.
Teller’s performance is highlighted by director James Gray, who emphasized that he wanted the character to embody both strength and vulnerability, steering clear of overt sentimentality. Gray noted his long-standing admiration for Teller’s talent, which he first heard about from director Damien Chazelle.
Teller shared that he resonated with the character deeply, especially as he was facing his own challenges due to the loss of his home in devastating fires. He remarked that themes of family, safety, and emotional turmoil greatly influenced his portrayal in the film.
Taking on the role of a father for the first time in a significant drama, Teller mentioned this emotional challenge, drawing inspiration from his father and grandfather, whom he described as strong yet emotionally attuned men balancing resilience with sensitivity.
Gray mentioned that “Paper Tiger” delves into moral decline and the increasingly transactional aspects of modern society. He suggested that the film’s imagery of the polluted canal serves as a symbolic reflection of societal corruption, pressure, and the emotional void present in familial relationships.
Featuring stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, “Paper Tiger” is poised for a theatrical release later this year, with early reactions from Cannes indicating it might emerge as one of the most discussed American films of 2026.
