UAE and Cyprus Strengthen Parliamentary Cooperation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of Cyprus have reaffirmed their strong and friendly relations during a meeting between Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Defence Affairs, Interior and Foreign Affairs Committee at the Federal National Council (FNC), and Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus. The meeting was attended by Sultan Salem Al Zaabi, FNC member, and Meropi Christofi, Ambassador of Cyprus to the UAE.

Both sides discussed ways to expand cooperation between their nations across multiple fields. The dialogue highlighted the shared commitment of the UAE and Cyprus to promote peace, mutual understanding, and collaboration through parliamentary and political diplomacy.

Focus on Parliamentary Diplomacy

During the meeting, both countries placed special emphasis on strengthening parliamentary diplomacy. This form of dialogue serves as an important extension of political diplomacy and helps foster stronger relations between nations.

Dr. Al Nuaimi noted that parliamentary relations are key to deepening cooperation between governments and citizens. He explained that the UAE believes in continuous engagement through parliamentary channels to build trust, share experiences, and promote common values.

He also highlighted that cooperation between the UAE Federal National Council and the Cypriot Parliament would open new opportunities for dialogue on regional and global issues of shared interest.

Promoting Tolerance and Coexistence

Dr. Al Nuaimi spoke about the UAE’s approach to promoting tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect among nations. He emphasized that the UAE has become a global model in rejecting hate speech, embracing diversity, and supporting dialogue between cultures and religions.

He explained that these principles form the foundation of the UAE’s internal and external policies. Through its positive engagement in international affairs, the UAE aims to build bridges of peace, cooperation, and understanding among different societies.

Al Nuaimi added that the UAE’s vision of coexistence and openness is not only reflected in its domestic environment but also in its diplomatic relationships worldwide.

Cyprus Praises UAE’s Vision and Leadership

In response, Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, praised the UAE’s leadership for its continued commitment to advancing cooperation across various sectors. He highlighted the strong relations between the two nations, particularly in the areas of economy, energy, renewable energy, and industry.

He noted that the UAE and Cyprus share a forward-looking vision for sustainable growth and innovation. By working together, both countries aim to create a model of partnership that promotes prosperity, development, and peace in the region and beyond.

Kombos also expressed admiration for the UAE’s efforts in parliamentary collaboration, calling it a vital step in expanding bilateral ties and encouraging long-term dialogue between their respective legislative institutions.

Expanding Cooperation Across Key Sectors

Both the UAE and Cyprus reaffirmed their desire to strengthen cooperation in several key sectors, including trade, energy, investment, and technology. The discussion also touched on the importance of sustainable development and the potential for future collaboration in environmental and educational initiatives.

They agreed that close coordination between their parliaments would help advance these goals and ensure that both countries benefit from shared experiences and policy development.

The leaders also discussed the global challenges facing nations today—such as climate change, security issues, and economic transformation—and stressed the importance of united efforts to address them through dialogue and partnership.

Building a Shared Future

The meeting ended with a shared commitment to continue enhancing bilateral relations through practical steps and regular exchanges between the UAE and Cyprus parliaments. Both sides expressed optimism about the future of their partnership, noting that the friendship between the two nations is built on mutual respect and shared values.

Dr. Al Nuaimi and Minister Kombos agreed that promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation will help ensure lasting peace and development for their people. The UAE and Cyprus look forward to building on their strong foundation to create a more connected and prosperous future together.
