In a big step toward the future of air travel, Archer Aviation has successfully tested its electric air taxi, called "Midnight," at Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi. This test was done as part of a larger plan led by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) to improve smart air transport in the UAE, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).
The flight was observed by important officials from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Abu Dhabi Airports, Abu Dhabi Aviation, the Integrated Transport Centre, and ADIO. It was also supported by Archer’s local partners.
The main goal of this flight was to check how the aircraft performs in the UAE’s unique weather—like high heat, humidity, and dusty air. This helps the company make sure the air taxi is ready for real use in the region.
Now that the first test was successful, Archer plans to continue testing more flights in the UAE. These upcoming tests will help them gather more data, which is important for getting official approvals and preparing for commercial services—both in the UAE and other countries in the region.
Badr Al Olama, Director-General of ADIO, said this test is a major move forward in Abu Dhabi’s goal of becoming a world leader in new air transport systems. He mentioned that through the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) Cluster, the city is helping companies like Archer test and grow their technology, making Abu Dhabi a center for innovation.
Adam Goldstein, CEO and Founder of Archer Aviation, said that flying their aircraft in real UAE conditions—especially during the summer—gives them valuable information to help with future certifications and to get ready for launching the service both in the UAE and the US.
This test flight is part of Archer’s Launch Edition program with Abu Dhabi Aviation. The program aims to bring air taxi services to Abu Dhabi soon. It comes alongside other progress, like getting approval for the UAE’s first hybrid heliport at Zayed Port’s cruise terminal.
Archer’s Launch Edition program is its way of starting operations in countries that are open to new transportation ideas. With Abu Dhabi as the first city in this program, it shows the emirate’s strong support for new technology and cleaner, more advanced travel options.
