The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has lowered its monsoon rainfall forecast for 2026, anticipating only 90 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA) for the southwest monsoon. This adjustment places the forecast in the below-normal range.
Initially predicted in April at 92 percent of the LPA, this downgrade is attributed to changing oceanic and atmospheric dynamics in the Pacific region. The evolving El Nino conditions are now deemed a major factor contributing to this less optimistic outlook.
Meteorological analysts explain that El Nino is characterized by warmer sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, disrupting global weather patterns and typically weakening the monsoon system in India. Such changes lead to diminished moisture-bearing winds and a shift in precipitation, adversely affecting large areas of the country.
Although Northwest India is likely to experience near-normal rainfall, other regions—including Central India, South Peninsular India, Northeast India, and crucial agricultural zones—are expected to see below-normal rainfall, which raises concerns for farmers.
Experts warn that El Nino's impact may strengthen through the second half of the monsoon season, particularly from July to September, potentially worsening rainfall deficits in various states. This situation could stress reservoirs, groundwater, and irrigation systems vital for millions of agricultural communities.
The IMD also indicates that much of the country may experience below-normal rainfall in June, along with higher-than-normal temperatures that could intensify heat stress on crops. Nevertheless, officials maintain hope for the swift arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala soon.
Agriculture professionals highlight that the southwest monsoon is essential, supplying nearly 70 percent of India’s annual rainfall and supporting the growth of critical kharif crops like rice, pulses, and oilseeds. Any significant deficit in rainfall could have far-reaching effects on food prices and rural livelihoods. Authorities will keep a close watch on the evolving El Nino situation and will provide updates as the monsoon progresses.
