MUSCAT, Oman — October 26, 2026: Several parts of Oman experienced heavy rainfall, hailstorms and strong winds on Monday as a low-pressure trough moved across the Sultanate. The weather system brought intense convective clouds, rainfall of varying intensity and strong downward-moving winds to several areas.
Wadi Al Jizzi in Suhar experienced severe hail, while rainwater flowed rapidly from local streams into the main wadis in Al Rustaq. The conditions were linked to the development of deep thunderstorm clouds over mountainous areas.
According to the Directorate General of Meteorology at the Civil Aviation Authority, thunderstorms developed over the mountains of Al Batinah North and Al Dhahirah governorates. Al Suwaiq and Yanqul were among the areas particularly affected by the changing weather conditions.
Muscat remained heavily overcast, while Al Amerat received scattered showers.
Clouds also spread towards the coastal areas of Al Khabourah, Saham, Al Suwaiq and Suhar, bringing mainly light rainfall, according to a weather forecaster quoted by Oman Observer.
Cloud cover extended towards Al Amerat as well, but the clouds were weakening and were expected to produce only light drizzle. Weather radar also confirmed hail over the mountainous areas of Saham and Suhar.
The weather conditions varied across the affected regions, with some areas experiencing severe hail and others receiving light rain or scattered showers.
Authorities urged residents and the public to remain cautious, especially near wadi beds and along mountain roads, where flowing rainwater and changing weather conditions could pose risks.
Thunderstorm activity over the Al Hajar Mountains was expected to continue into Monday evening. Scattered rain, occasional thunderstorms and strong downward-moving winds were forecast across Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, northern Al Dakhiliyah and Al Sharqiyah North.
Meteorologists said the weather system could extend into neighbouring areas and was expected to affect the region until Wednesday.
The forecast for Tuesday indicated generally clear skies across most of Oman's governorates, although high clouds were expected to remain.
Convective clouds were forecast to develop again over the Al Hajar Mountains and along the Sea of Oman coast during the afternoon. These clouds could bring isolated rainfall, thunderstorms and strong downdraft winds. By evening, the cloud activity was expected to extend towards desert areas.
Fog or low clouds were also expected late at night and during the early morning along the Arabian Sea and Sea of Oman coasts, as well as in parts of Al Dhahirah.
Light to moderate easterly and northeasterly winds were forecast along the Sea of Oman coast, becoming light and variable overnight.
Southwesterly winds were expected along the Arabian Sea coast. Other governorates were forecast to experience light to moderate southeasterly winds.
The weather outlook indicated that conditions could continue to vary across Oman as the low-pressure system influenced the region through Wednesday
