Dubai Announces Official Mourning
Dubai is mourning the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who passed away at the age of 76 after decades of public service and involvement in the emirate's sporting institutions.Following the announcement of his death, Dubai declared ten days of official mourning, with flags lowered to half-mast.
A Member of Dubai's Ruling Family
Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, a central figure in Dubai's modern development.
He was also the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.His family has played a significant role in Dubai's political, economic and institutional development.
Decades of Public Service
Sheikh Ahmed's career included military leadership and public security responsibilities.
A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he later commanded Dubai's Central Military Region and served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security.His public responsibilities placed him among figures associated with the development of Dubai's security and public institutions.
Long Association With Al Wasl
One of Sheikh Ahmed's most visible public associations was with Al Wasl Sports Club.As the club's long-serving president, he remained closely connected with an institution that became an important part of Dubai's sporting culture.Al Wasl has developed teams across several sports, including football, basketball, volleyball and handball, giving generations of athletes opportunities to compete and develop their careers.
Contribution to Horse Racing in Dubai
Sheikh Ahmed also played an important role in Dubai's horse-racing landscape.
Under his guidance, the Jebel Ali Racecourse track and grandstand were constructed in 1990.The racecourse subsequently became an established part of Dubai's sporting infrastructure and remains closely connected with the emirate's horse-racing community.
Maritime Sports and the Victory Team
His involvement in sport extended beyond football and horse racing.Sheikh Ahmed was involved in establishing the Dubai International Marine Club and became its first chairman in 1988.He also played a role in the establishment of the Victory Team in 1989, contributing to the development of Dubai's maritime sporting activities.

Following his death, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum paid tribute to his brother.UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also offered condolences and recognised Sheikh Ahmed's contribution to the country's development.His legacy is closely associated with both public service and sporting institutions that have remained part of Dubai's social and cultural landscape.
