A tremor registering 3.0 on the Richter scale shook Tibet early Saturday morning, according to updates from seismic monitoring agencies.
The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, a factor that can intensify surface shaking compared to deeper seismic events. Its epicentre was pinpointed at 28.37°N latitude and 88.02°E longitude, with the event reported at 03:40:55 IST.
Although this tremor was minor with no immediate reports of damage or injuries, earthquakes at shallow depths can be more alarming, as their seismic waves travel shorter distances and are clearer on the surface.
The Tibetan Plateau is notably susceptible to seismic events due to ongoing tectonic movements in the region. Tibet and Nepal are situated near a significant fault line where the Indian tectonic plate continuously collides with the Eurasian plate. This long-term interaction is integral to the uplift and formation of the Himalayas, rendering the area vulnerable to frequent quakes.
Experts indicate that Tibet's elevation is a product of substantial thickening of the earth's crust over millions of years, caused by the persistent pressure from the colliding plates. As stress accumulates in the crust, it is periodically discharged, resulting in earthquakes.
Seismic activities in the plateau stem from a mix of strike-slip faulting and normal fault movements. The region, predominantly aligned east–west, features several rift zones and fault lines that are in continuous flux.
In northern Tibet, the predominant tectonic behavior is strike-slip faulting, linked to some of the strongest earthquakes in the region, with magnitudes reaching 8.0 or higher.
Conversely, southern Tibet is characterized by east–west crustal extension and north–south normal faults that sculpt the terrain. Although these faults typically induce smaller earthquakes, they can still generate tremors across extensive areas.
Satellite studies have revealed seven principal north–south rifts and normal faults in southern Tibet. Researchers estimate that these geological features began developing between 4 to 8 million years ago, corresponding to a time of increased tectonic stretching.
Previous earthquakes associated with normal faults in Tibet have reached magnitudes between 5.9 and 7.1, including a series documented in 2008 across various locations on the plateau.
The mild tremor on Saturday underscores the region's active tectonic nature, where seismic occurrences are a frequent natural event.
