At least five inmates have been killed in a violent riot at a high-security prison in Venezuela, officials confirmed.
According to the Ministry of Penitentiary Services, the incident took place at Yare prison, located around 70 kilometres from the capital city, Caracas. The violence broke out when a fight between prisoners escalated and turned into a full-scale riot.
Authorities said the situation involved inmates inside the maximum-security facility, but they did not share details about how the deaths occurred or whether others were injured.
The ministry stated that the Public Prosecutor’s Office has started an investigation into the incident. However, no further information, including the number of injured inmates, has been released so far.
The Yare prison complex has previously faced concerns over overcrowding and security issues, which have contributed to unrest in the past.
Officials are expected to continue their investigation to determine the exact cause of the riot and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
