Abu Dhabi Unveils New Oral Medication for Obesity Management

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has unveiled a daily oral treatment specifically designed for obesity, as part of the Personalised Weight Management Programme. This initiative is in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, aiming to enhance access to advanced healthcare solutions.

This programme integrates medical treatment, behavioural support, and ongoing digital monitoring to assist individuals in effectively managing their weight. The holistic approach is focused on achieving better long-term health outcomes and improving quality of life.

Maintaining adherence to obesity treatment has often been challenging, but the introduction of a daily oral medication provides a more flexible and convenient option compared to traditional methods. This is anticipated to help patients remain consistent in their treatment.

Officials have emphasized that this initiative demonstrates Abu Dhabi's dedication to patient-centred healthcare, tailoring treatments to fit seamlessly into daily routines and tackle real-life challenges. Expanding access to modern treatment is viewed as a critical step toward sustainable health enhancements.

The UAE has become the second nation after the United States to approve this innovative treatment for adults dealing with obesity or those merely overweight with an associated health condition, showcasing the country’s pioneering role in adopting cutting-edge healthcare solutions.

Initially, the treatment will be available at the Imperial College London Diabetes & Endocrine Centre. Eligible patients will be part of a comprehensive programme that includes digital health tracking and tailored clinical support.

This new medication, known as Foundayo (orforglipron), falls under the category of GLP-1 receptor agonists. It operates by mimicking a hormone that plays a role in regulating appetite and food intake, thus enhancing the efficacy of weight management.

Eligible adults participating in the programme will have the treatment covered, ensuring greater access to necessary care. Health authorities are optimistic that this initiative will empower individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles and achieve sustainable results.

This advancement represents a significant milestone in the enhancement of Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system, emphasizing innovation, accessibility, and improved patient outcomes.
