Afghanistan Sets Limits on Overseas League Participation for Players

Afghanistan Sets Limits on Overseas League Participation for Players

Post by : Meena Hassan

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has recently enacted a policy that caps the number of overseas franchise leagues its premier players, such as acclaimed all-rounder Rashid Khan, can engage in each year. Under these revised regulations, players will be permitted to participate in only three international franchise tournaments annually.

This decision, made during the board's annual general meeting in Kabul on Wednesday, aims to ensure the physical fitness and mental well-being of players, many of whom have been involved in continuous play across various international leagues.

Afghan players have gained immense popularity in global T20 tournaments in recent years owing to their impressive performances, especially in spin bowling and all-round capacities. This heightened demand has led to hectic schedules, extensive international travel, and minimal recovery periods.

Cricket board officials have cautioned that such demanding duties could result in injuries, fatigue, mental exhaustion, and potential long-term impacts on performance. The recently introduced policy aims to assist players in managing their workloads while prolonging their careers at elite levels.

In addition to limiting international appearances, the policy mandates that centrally contracted players must be available for a revamped domestic cricket tournament. The board is optimistic that this will greatly enhance Afghanistan's domestic cricket framework.

By incorporating senior national players into domestic competitions, the board intends to elevate playing standards and give younger cricketers valuable insights from seasoned professionals. This initiative will also aid in the identification of new talent and the establishment of a robust pipeline for the national team.

The restructured domestic league is anticipated to play a pivotal role in rejuvenating the country’s cricketing framework. Frequent high-caliber games at home will enhance player readiness and provide selectors with a clearer perspective of up-and-coming talent.

The board has also emphasized that national team obligations will take precedence over franchise commitments. Players chosen for international missions, training sessions, or national events will need to prioritize these responsibilities, even if it impacts their participation in overseas leagues.

Officials clarified that this policy is designed not to restrict players' earning potential, but to promote their long-term health and availability for Afghan cricket. A balanced approach between international experience and domestic duties is crucial for sustainable development.

This new policy symbolizes a wider initiative to safeguard the future of Afghan cricket by prioritizing player fitness, reinforcing domestic competitions, and ensuring the national team remains competitive on the world stage.
