The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has unveiled its shortlist of five actors competing for the only award determined by the public vote, signifying a pivotal moment for rising talent. Announced on Wednesday, the nominees for the Rising Star Award are among the most eagerly awaited at the BAFTA Film Awards.
This year’s nominees hail from diverse backgrounds and countries, each delivering standout performances that have captivated both critics and audiences alike over the past year. British actors Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling join the ranks of American talent Infiniti, musician-turned-actor Caton, and British figure Aramayo on this esteemed list.
Distinctive among BAFTA's accolades, the Rising Star Award is the only honor voted on by the public, allowing fans to support the actor they feel has shown remarkable promise and impact. Historically, this award has been a launchpad for many now-renowned stars.
Infiniti, nominated for her compelling role in the acclaimed film One Battle After Another, portrays Willa, the kidnapped daughter of a character played by Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio. Despite acting alongside a Hollywood veteran, Infiniti’s gripping performance was highly regarded, showcasing her capacity to evoke emotions like fear and resilience, solidifying her as a prominent newcomer.
Caton made a splash with his nomination for his role in Sinners, marking his debut in acting. Transitioning from music, he delivered a heartfelt performance as Sammie, a blues musician grappling with personal challenges. Critics have praised his natural ability and emotional resonance on screen.
British actor Aramayo earned his spot for his portrayal of John Davidson in I Swear, a film inspired by true activism. His performance sheds light on Tourette syndrome through a lens of sensitivity and authenticity, enabling a crucial conversation about a frequently misunderstood condition.
Archie Madekwe is recognized for his intense role in Lurker, where he embodies Oliver, a rising pop star embroiled in a high-stakes scenario. His performance, balancing allure with vulnerability, impressed audiences and critics alike, marking the film as a thrilling experience.
Lastly, Posy Sterling is nominated for her heart-wrenching role in Lollipop, where she portrays Molly, a young mother striving to rebuild her life post-incarceration. Her raw and emotionally charged performance shines a light on the challenges many face when reintegrating into society.
The winner of the Rising Star Award will be revealed at the BAFTA Film Awards on February 22, joining a prestigious lineup of previous recipients, such as Tom Holland and Daniel Kaluuya, who have gone on to remarkable success.
BAFTA also announced that the full list of nominees for the 2026 Film Awards will be released on January 27. As anticipation grows, the Rising Star Award continues to spotlight the next generation of actors poised to redefine the cinematic landscape.
