A rights advocacy group has expressed alarming revelations regarding the treatment of workers at a factory in China responsible for making Labubu dolls. According to a report from the U.S.-based China Labor Watch (CLW), employees at Shunjia Toys Co Ltd, a manufacturer for Pop Mart, reportedly endured excessive working hours, signed incomplete contracts, and experienced denial of paid leave.
The Labubu dolls, popular for their unique "blind box" concept that keeps the toy inside a surprise until opened, have gained significant traction globally. Pop Mart, based in Beijing and the brand behind Labubu, has stated they are looking into these allegations. The company emphasizes it values the insights from the report and will address any suppliers violating labor standards.
Additionally, Pop Mart mentioned its routine practice of auditing suppliers, which includes annual inspections by independent and reputable auditors.
The focus of CLW’s investigation was Shunjia Toys Co Ltd, located in Guangdong province in southern China. The organization interviewed 51 workers to assess hiring practices, contracts, and labor conditions. This factory serves as an essential production hub for Pop Mart, employing over 4,500 individuals.
The findings pointed to various labor-related issues, such as unlawful overtime, ambiguous contract terms, and inadequate safety training. While the investigation found no evidence of child labor, 16-year-old employees faced the same working conditions as adults, lacking the special protections mandated by Chinese law.
CLW urged Pop Mart to take prompt action, recommending compensation for affected workers and a commitment to aligning production practices with both Chinese labor laws and global standards. The organization remarked that labor conditions in facilities like Shunjia are significantly affected by the sourcing and scheduling strategies employed by the brands they service.
Labubu dolls, characterized by their elf-like figures with distinct jagged teeth, have captured global attention. The phenomenon has resulted in bustling queues in retail stores, boosted by celebrity endorsements from personalities such as Kim Kardashian and Lisa from the K-pop sensation Blackpink, furthering Pop Mart's international reach.
