Severe Damage to Air India Express Flight in Oman

Post by : Shakul

A Boeing 737-800 operated by Air India Express, on a flight from Muscat to Kerala's Kannur, incurred substantial damage while preparing for takeoff at Muscat International Airport in Oman. The incident occurred on the night of May 15, prompting an official aviation investigation by Omani regulators.

Initial reports indicate that the aircraft was nearing takeoff speed when it veered off and collided with several runway edge lights at runway 26L, leading to damage to the nose landing gear and other critical issues, compelling the pilots to abort the takeoff.

Pilots reported a loud noise originating from the front of the aircraft immediately after the collision. Technical teams upon inspection found a hydraulic leak and a damaged tire, while aviation authorities later noted that both engines sustained internal injuries due to debris being ingested during the incident.

Passengers and crew were swiftly evacuated from the plane while it remained stationary on the runway. Airport emergency services quickly secured the area and escorted the individuals back to the terminal without any significant injuries reported.

The aircraft was held at Muscat Airport for days as safety checks and technical evaluations were conducted. Subsequently, Air India Express organized a replacement Boeing 737-800 for stranded passengers, which unfortunately took off more than thirteen hours behind schedule.

Oman's Air Accidents Investigation Sector has labeled this an aviation accident and is undertaking a comprehensive investigation into the event. Investigators will assess runway conditions, aircraft operating procedures, cockpit communication, and potential technical or operational factors that may have influenced the incident.

Air India Express, in a formal statement, affirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with the Oman Transport Safety Bureau during the inquiry. The airline also mentioned that it provided alternative transportation and accommodation to the impacted passengers to ease inconveniences caused by the incident.

This incident underscores the critical nature of robust runway safety measures and effective emergency response protocols at international airports. Experts in aviation believe the investigation outcomes could enhance operational safety policies and avert similar incidents moving forward.
