Air India Flight AI479 Crosses into Pakistan Airspace Briefly

Post by : Bianca Haleem

An Air India flight traveling from Delhi to Amritsar inadvertently crossed into Pakistani airspace while executing a go-around procedure near Amritsar airport on June 22, according to airline officials.

Flight AI479 experienced this incident as part of standard aviation safety practices during its approach to the airport, which is close to the India-Pakistan border.

Air India confirmed that the flight crew had "marginally infringed" upon Pakistani airspace while attempting a go-around—an action that occurs when a landing approach needs to be aborted.

Preliminary details indicate that Air Traffic Control (ATC) directed the flight to hold over 13 DME (Distance Measuring Equipment). However, the aircraft deviated towards the Amritsar sector, made a left turn, and briefly crossed the International Border.

The flight subsequently corrected its route and landed safely at Amritsar airport.

According to Air India's statement, "On June 22, the crew of flight AI479 from Delhi to Amritsar did marginally enter Pakistani airspace during a go-around near Amritsar airport."

The airline assures that this issue has been communicated to the necessary regulatory bodies and is also being assessed internally.

Air India emphasized, "The safety of passengers and crew is our utmost priority. The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and is under investigation."

No further specifics were given regarding the causes of the airspace violation.

Regulatory agencies have begun standard inquiries to clarify the conditions that allowed the aircraft to veer outside of Indian airspace during the maneuver.

Ultimately, the flight landed in Amritsar around 2:20 AM Tuesday, approximately four hours delayed from its planned entry.

Understanding a Go-Around

A go-around represents a typical safety maneuver in aviation where pilots halt their landing approach and gain altitude to attempt a landing again.

This process may become necessary due to factors like poor visibility, bad weather, runway congestion, or conflicts with air traffic, and is deemed essential for ensuring safe landings by regulators and airlines.

During such procedures, aircraft might temporarily stray from their planned routes, particularly at airports situated near international boundaries.

This event occurred roughly one month after a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight briefly entered Indian airspace due to bad weather, later being redirected by Indian air traffic controllers.

Additionally, this situation comes at a time when restrictions on Indian aircraft using Pakistani airspace continue due to a ban extended by Pakistan in May.

Summary of the Incident

On June 22, Air India flight AI479 from Delhi executed a brief incursion into Pakistani airspace during a go-around maneuver while approaching Amritsar airport.

Reason for Airspace Entry

Initial assessments suggest that the aircraft proceeded towards Amritsar after ATC instructed it to hold over 13 DME, leading to a left turn that crossed the International Border.

Location of the Incident

The occurrence happened near Amritsar airport, which is adjacent to the India-Pakistan border.

Date of the Incident

The airspace violation took place on June 22 during the approach of flight AI479 from Delhi to Amritsar.

Defining a Go-Around

A go-around is a common safety maneuver where pilots abandon their landing attempt and climb to set up another approach.

Investigation Status

Yes, Air India has informed regulatory authorities of the incident and initiated an internal investigation, which is alongside a standard inquiry by aviation bodies.
