In a significant blow to the tennis community, Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the French Open 2026, citing a right wrist injury that prevents him from defending his title.
The Spanish tennis sensation made the announcement on Friday, following medical examinations that revealed both tendon inflammation and cartilage damage in his wrist. This issue first became apparent during the Barcelona Open earlier this month and has since intensified.
After discussions with his medical team, Alcaraz made the tough choice to prioritize his health by opting for recovery, which also means he will miss the Italian Open, thus concluding his participation in the entire clay-court season.
In a statement shared on X, Alcaraz expressed that while this decision was difficult, it was essential for his well-being. He emphasized that his current focus is on healing and tracking his recovery progress before determining a comeback date, expressing confidence in returning stronger than ever.
Tournament officials from Roland-Garros conveyed heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery, acknowledging how much the two-time defending champion will be missed this year.
Alcaraz's withdrawal will have significant repercussions on the ATP rankings. As the defending champion in both Rome and Paris, he is projected to lose approximately 3,000 ranking points, potentially reshaping the top rankings in the near future.
At just 21 years old, Alcaraz aimed for a third consecutive French Open title after his back-to-back victories in 2024 and 2025. His 2025 final triumph against Jannik Sinner, where he miraculously saved three championship points during a grueling match over five and a half hours, is already hailed as one of the most remarkable in tournament's history.
With Alcaraz sidelined, the spotlight shifts to world No. 1 Sinner and Alexander Zverev, who now find themselves with a prime opportunity on the clay courts this season.
Nonetheless, the absence of the defending champion will undoubtedly create a void, making the 2026 French Open a markedly different competition.
