Rising Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala advanced to the last 16 of the Indian Wells Open after world number four Coco Gauff retired due to injury during their third-round match on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Eala was leading comfortably 6-2, 2-0 when Gauff decided to stop the match because of pain in her left arm. The American star had earlier taken an injury timeout late in the first set after experiencing discomfort.
During the medical break, a trainer examined Gauff’s shoulder and arm. She later returned to the court with her forearm wrapped, but the treatment did not resolve the issue. After losing the first set and being broken early in the second set, Gauff approached the net and informed Eala that she could not continue.
Eala, who is emerging as one of the promising young talents on the women’s tennis tour, said she was disappointed the match ended that way but appreciated the opportunity to compete on one of the tournament’s biggest stages.
“I really didn't want to win this way, but this is still a really big moment for me to play on Stadium One at Indian Wells and against such a great competitor,” Eala said, while also wishing Gauff a quick recovery.
With the victory, Eala moves into the fourth round of the prestigious tournament. She will next face Czech player Linda Noskova, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
