Call for Global Regulation of AI by Anthropic Co-founder at Vatican Gathering

Post by : Bianca Haleem

During an event at the Vatican on Monday, Chris Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, asserted that the evolution of artificial intelligence should encompass more than just technology firms. He advocated for heightened oversight from governments, religious organizations, and civil actors.

While unveiling Pope Leo’s first encyclical regarding AI, Olah cautioned about the imminent threat of substantial job displacement, emphasizing that many roles could soon be overtaken by AI technologies.

He articulated that addressing the needs of displaced employees would emerge as a crucial ethical obligation for society.

Olah pointed out that AI enterprises are often subjected to significant commercial, political, and personal influences that may not align with societal interests. He suggested that these pressures can detract from the public good, even when companies intend to prioritize ethical practices, highlighting the necessity for external oversight.

Anthropic, known for the Claude AI platform, has experienced tensions with government entities, particularly concerning regulations related to military applications of AI, such as autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance initiatives.

He expressed appreciation for the Catholic Church’s involvement in conversations about artificial intelligence, arguing that the ethical dilemmas surrounding AI extend beyond the technical sphere.

Olah identified three central issues: the potential for widespread job loss, the need for equitable distribution of AI advantages, and the complexity of understanding advanced AI systems.

He also noted that AI advancements are predominantly occurring in affluent nations, leading to concerns about global disparities. He questioned how AI's rewards can be equitably allocated on a worldwide scale.

This gathering represented a significant junction between the tech world and the Catholic Church, as both entities deliberate the ethical and societal implications of swiftly evolving AI technologies.
