Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Council of the Arab League, meeting at the ministerial level, has unanimously approved a resolution recommending the nomination of former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy for the position of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.

The recommendation will be presented at the 35th Ordinary Session of the Arab Summit, scheduled to take place in the Saudi Arabia. If approved, Fahmy is set to serve a five-year term beginning on 1 July 2026.

During the ministerial council meeting, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty welcomed the unanimous decision, stating that it reflects the strong confidence of Arab nations in Egypt’s diplomatic experience and its continued role in advancing collective Arab cooperation.

In response, Fahmy expressed deep gratitude to Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for nominating him for the position. He also thanked member states for their unanimous support during the 165th session of Arab foreign ministers.

Fahmy acknowledged the significance of the role, highlighting the complex challenges currently facing the Arab world, including ongoing regional tensions and violations of international law. He pledged to approach the responsibility with dedication and a clear sense of purpose.

He further emphasized his commitment to working closely with member states to address shared challenges, strengthen regional cooperation, and promote stability, security, and sustainable development across the Arab region.
