On Tuesday night, Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu & Kashmir experienced a significant avalanche that buried homes and vehicles in the Sarbal area. Authorities have confirmed no injuries or fatalities related to the event.
The avalanche, which occurred around 10:12 PM, unleashed a great volume of snow towards buildings and hotels nearby. CCTV captured the moment the snowstorm overwhelmed the structures.
Officials reassured the public that there were no casualties reported. A serious avalanche warning had been issued on Monday due to the ongoing snowfall in the region.
Additionally, the fresh snowfall on Tuesday led to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and caused all flights at Srinagar airport to be canceled, stranding numerous tourists.
National Highway 44 was shut down as snow buildup near the Navyug tunnel at Qazigund and Banihal rendered the route dangerous for travel. At Srinagar International Airport, all 58 scheduled flights — 29 arrivals and 29 departures — were canceled due to unsafe runway conditions from the persistent snowfall.
Authorities are closely monitoring the developments and have advised residents and visitors to remain vigilant in avalanche-prone areas.
