Tragic Avalanches in Austria Claim Eight Lives

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Vienna:

On Saturday, three distinct avalanches in Austria resulted in the deaths of eight skiers, as authorities reported, underscoring the alarming avalanche risks currently present in the region.

The first incident occurred in the Bad Hofgastein area of western Austria, where a female skier was tragically buried by an avalanche at around 12:30 p.m., at an elevation of roughly 2,200 meters, based on information from the Pongau mountain rescue service.

Approximately 90 minutes later, another avalanche occurred in the Gastein Valley, located south of Salzburg. This second slide trapped seven individuals, leading to the deaths of four skiers, with two suffering serious injuries, while one person managed to escape unharmed.

Later that afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., a third avalanche struck near Pusterwald in central Austria. Authorities confirmed that three Czech skiers perished in this incident, while four other members of their group were successfully rescued and evacuated.

Gerhard Kremser, head of the Pongau mountain rescue service, remarked that these incidents serve as a tragic reminder of the hazards associated with current conditions. He emphasized that multiple avalanche warnings had been issued and urged the public to heed these alerts seriously.
