Three Injured in Bomb Blast at NCP Rally in Savar, Bangladesh

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Monday night, a bomb exploded at a political rally of Bangladesh's student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar, close to Dhaka, injuring at least three people.

The incident occurred around 9:45 PM during the gathering at the Savar Thana Stand Eidgah field, coinciding with the kickoff of the party's July March campaign aimed at advocating for political and economic reforms nationwide.

NCP Claims Targeted Attack

The NCP has accused unnamed individuals of executing a targeted attack on their rally. They stated, "At the post-march venue in Savar, terrorists set off a bomb as the rally was ongoing at around 9:45 PM on Monday."

Details about the injured individuals have not yet been disclosed.

Students Leading the Charge

This rally, primarily organized by students, plays a vital role in the campaign against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It marks the anniversary of protests that previously led to her ouster from power.

The campaign's goals include advocating for a public referendum, generating job opportunities, tackling the power crisis, controlling inflation, and enhancing border security.

Nationwide July Campaign Set to Expand

The July March is part of a broader initiative initiated by the National Citizen Party as a means to rally public support through various events across Bangladesh in July.

Extradition Inquiry for Sheikh Hasina Ongoing

Following the political changes termed the "July Revolution," Sheikh Hasina departed for India on August 5, 2024.

Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs announced on April 17 that it is currently reviewing an extradition request from Bangladesh via legal procedures to ensure stable relations with the newly transitioned government.
