Inter Miami Delays Coach Search Following Mascherano's Resignation

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Following the surprising resignation of head coach Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami CF co-owner David Beckham has emphasized the need for patience, indicating that the club will carefully consider its options before appointing a new coach.

Mascherano stepped down earlier this week due to personal reasons, shortly after a 2-2 tie with the New York Red Bulls. Sources reveal that the resignation was decided over the weekend, catching the organization off guard at the onset of the season.

In response, sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has stepped in as interim manager. With a current record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 3 draws totaling 12 points, Inter Miami is set to face the Colorado Rapids in their next match.

In an interview with CBS Sports, Beckham acknowledged that Mascherano’s departure is a challenging time for the franchise, especially as he guided the team to its first MLS Cup title in 2025.

“Mascherano is an excellent individual and coach. He earned the respect and admiration of the players, but such changes are part of football,” Beckham said. “At this moment, it’s vital for us to allow matters to settle before proceeding with any decisions regarding a new head coach.”

Mascherano, who is 41, was brought on as head coach in November 2024 after replacing Gerardo Martino. He led a Lionel Messi-led team to significant victories, including an MLS Cup win, a Leagues Cup final, and a semifinal appearance in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

This role marked Mascherano’s first as a club head coach, coming after his tenure managing Argentina’s youth teams since 2021. Under his guidance, the youth teams advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Additionally, chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will be temporarily taking on extra duties to assist in the transition for the club.

Inter Miami now faces a period of adjustment as it aims to maintain stability on the pitch while carefully plotting the next steps in its coaching structure.
