Ben Shemen Forest Fire Brought Under Control in Central Israel

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A fire that broke out in central Israel's Ben Shemen Forest has been brought under control after forcing the temporary closure of Highways 1 and 6, according to the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority.

The wildfire, which started earlier on Tuesday, prompted emergency services to respond as flames spread through the forest area. Authorities later confirmed that the situation had been brought under control, although firefighting operations are still ongoing.

No Injuries Reported

A spokesperson for Magen David Adom (MDA) said later on Tuesday that no injuries had been reported. MDA medical teams remain at the scene and are prepared to provide treatment if required.

Emergency responders continue to monitor the area while supporting firefighting efforts.

Highways 1 and 6 Reopened

The Israel Police announced later on Tuesday that both Highway 1 and Highway 6 had reopened to traffic after being closed because of the fire.

Police officers remain in the area to direct traffic and manage vehicle movement. Despite the reopening of the roads, authorities have advised motorists to avoid the area if possible due to ongoing traffic congestion.

Firefighting Operations Continue

According to the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority, 21 firefighting crews and four firefighting aircraft are continuing efforts to fully extinguish the remaining open-air fire.

The blaze began earlier on Tuesday, and firefighters remain at the scene to prevent any further spread.

Earlier Highway Fire Incident

Highway 1 was also briefly closed in the eastbound direction on Monday after a vehicle caught fire near Shoresh Interchange outside Jerusalem.

Authorities said that incident did not result in any injuries.

Rising Temperatures Increase Fire Risk

Authorities noted that increasing global temperatures have contributed to the recent rise in the size and intensity of forest fires.

In response to the growing wildfire threat, the National Security Ministry, the Israel Innovation Authority, IAI, Technion, and the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority are working together on a project aimed at detecting fires as quickly as possible, potentially within moments of ignition.
