Ben Stokes Signals Franchise Return After Durham Century

Ben Stokes Signals Franchise Return After Durham Century

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Former England captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket on June 28, 2026, at the age of 35, following the third Test against New Zealand. While 35 was once considered a typical retirement age in cricket, many players now continue their careers beyond that stage. Although age and fitness may have influenced his decision, the retirement also came after the nightclub controversy that led to his suspension for the second Test.

Stokes Scores Match-Winning Century for Durham

Less than a month after retiring, Ben Stokes returned to the field in impressive fashion. On July 21, he smashed a 123-ball century for Durham against Derbyshire in the England One Day Cup, leading his side to a comfortable five-wicket victory.

Ryan Campbell Confirms Stokes Will Continue for Durham

After the match, Durham head coach Ryan Campbell said Stokes is expected to feature in most of Durham's remaining One-Day Cup and County Championship matches.

Campbell said: "He is now a retired Test superstar who has reported back for duty for Durham... At this stage he's going to play every game we can."

Coach Hints at Franchise Cricket Return

Campbell also suggested that Stokes could return to franchise cricket in the future.

He said: "But, just listening to him, there will be a couple of franchise worlds that he will want to put his toes into and with that, plus our stuff, I reckon it's pretty exciting for him."

Although he did not mention the Indian Premier League (IPL) directly, the comments indicate that Stokes is open to franchise opportunities.

Stokes Eligible for IPL 2027 Mini Auction

Stokes last played in the IPL in 2023 for Chennai Super Kings, appearing in only two matches because of injury. After skipping the 2024 IPL auction, he has now completed the two-year ban under BCCI regulations, making him eligible to register for the IPL 2027 mini auction if he decides to return.

Focus Remains on Durham Cricket

Despite being open to franchise cricket, Stokes chose not to register for The Hundred 2026, instead focusing on his fitness and continuing his domestic cricket commitments with Durham.
