Billie Eilish Set to Star in New Film Adaptation of The Bell Jar

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dubai – Grammy-winning singer Billie Eilish is reportedly in talks to make her feature film acting debut in a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s iconic novel, The Bell Jar.

The project is expected to be directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley, known for the acclaimed drama Women Talking. If confirmed, Eilish would play Esther Greenwood, the troubled young writer at the center of Plath’s semi-autobiographical story.

Published in 1963, The Bell Jar explores Esther’s psychological struggles as she navigates ambition, identity, and societal expectations in the 1950s. The novel is widely regarded for its powerful portrayal of mental health challenges and the pressures faced by young women.

Polley will both write and direct the adaptation, bringing her unique storytelling style to this deeply introspective narrative. Her previous film, Women Talking, earned an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and a Best Picture nomination, raising expectations for this new project.

While Eilish is primarily known for her music, she has already begun exploring acting. In 2023, she appeared in the Amazon Prime series Swarm, playing a brief but memorable role as a cult-like spiritual leader.

Eilish has strong ties to the film industry through music, winning two Academy Awards alongside her brother and collaborator Finneas for Best Original Song – for No Time to Die and Barbie.

Fans have expressed mixed reactions online. Some joked about singers moving into acting, while others predicted awards-season success, suggesting Eilish could secure her third Oscar.

Deadline reports that this adaptation continues a long history of attempted versions of The Bell Jar. Previous efforts included actors like Julia Stiles and Kirsten Dunst, but only the 1979 film starring Marilyn Hassett was completed, receiving mixed reviews.
