BuCor Calls for NBI Inquiry into Fatal Puerto Princesa Shooting

BuCor Calls for NBI Inquiry into Fatal Puerto Princesa Shooting

Post by : Shakul

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has urged the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to take the lead in probing a tragic shooting incident in Puerto Princesa that left a corrections officer dead alongside two police personnel. Occurring on Good Friday, this incident has sparked serious inquiries into police actions and standard operating procedures.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. highlighted the necessity for an impartial investigation, given the direct involvement of police officers. Early reports indicate that the corrections officer was forcibly abducted from his residence by individuals identified as police officers before the shooting erupted.

In response, the Philippine National Police reported that four officers have been disarmed and taken into custody for their unauthorized response to the shooting. They could potentially face grave charges, ranging from homicide to murder, depending on the investigatory outcomes.

Officials cited significant disciplinary shortcomings, including reports of officers appearing in civilian attire and allegedly being under the influence of alcohol. Both BuCor and police forces are conducting their own investigations, pledging accountability and a commitment to avoid any cover-up. Protective custody measures have been instituted for the victim’s family as the investigation proceeds.
