In Noida, authorities have apprehended builder Abhay Kumar after a tragic incident where 27-year-old Yuvraj Mehta drowned when his SUV plunged into a water-filled construction pit.
Kumar is one of the two owners of the firm overseeing the construction site, while police are actively searching for the second owner, Manish Kumar.
This unfortunate accident took place in Sector 150, where a 20-foot-deep pit, initially excavated in 2021 for a mall's basement, has been hazardous since construction work halted and the pit accumulated water in 2022.
Following the incident, Mehta's father filed a complaint, prompting police to initiate a case against the involved construction companies. One of these companies defended itself by stating they sold the project in 2019-2020 and had received all necessary local authority approvals.
Investigations are underway to uncover the failure of safety protocols and the decision to leave such a perilous pit accessible for years. Meanwhile, the police remain on the lookout for the second project owner.
Officials have alerted builders and developers across the region, calling for stringent safety measures at construction sites to avert similar tragedies in the future.
