The ongoing conflict at the Cambodia-Thailand border has forced over 500,000 individuals to evacuate their homes, enduring significant hardships as fierce fighting continues. This clash has persisted for almost two weeks, wreaking havoc on communities on both sides.
According to Cambodia’s interior ministry, more than 518,000 residents are currently facing dire conditions after being uprooted from their homes and educational institutions. Numerous families have sought refuge in safer regions to avoid the dangers posed by artillery shelling and aerial bombardments.
The violence has resulted in numerous casualties as well. Authorities report 22 fatalities in Thailand and 19 in Cambodia, with heavy weaponry including tanks and drones being deployed during the confrontations.
This border dispute, which has historical roots and relates to an 800-kilometer boundary established during colonial times, has been aggravated by tensions around ancient temple ruins.
To address the rising tensions, both nations have agreed to participate in a regional meeting in Malaysia on Monday, involving foreign ministers from Southeast Asian countries, aimed at fostering dialogue and peace.
Thailand has underscored the significance of the meeting but insists that Cambodia first declare a ceasefire and assist in clearing landmines from the border area.
Cambodia has expressed its commitment to resolving issues through dialogue and diplomacy, seeking to mend relations with Thailand.
The border clashes have also led to substantial displacement within Thailand, with around 400,000 people forced to leave their residences. Thai officials report that over 200,000 remain in shelters, and although some have returned, they are cautioned about the presence of landmines and unexploded munitions.
Both countries have exchanged accusations regarding the initiation of the conflict. Previous clashes in July resulted in numerous deaths before a temporary ceasefire took effect, which subsequently fell apart.
Renewed confrontations erupted on December 7 and have persisted daily, notably around the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple, a historically contentious location.
A court ruling in 2013 had resolved many earlier disputes, but the situation deteriorated following the death of a Cambodian soldier in a border skirmish in May.
As the border conflict continues, thousands of families remain uprooted, children are deprived of educational opportunities, and everyday life in the region has ground to a halt.
