Ex-Teacher in Singapore Found Guilty of Grooming a Minor

Post by : Shakul

A Singapore court has ruled against a 41-year-old former teacher, finding him guilty of grooming a minor and engaging in indecent acts, prompting serious concerns about the abuse of authority in schools. The accused deliberately fostered a false emotional bond with the student in an effort to conceal his inappropriate motives.

The victim, who was just 13 to 14 years old and in Secondary 2 during the incidents that occurred in 2022, was misled by the teacher under the guise of academic assistance, gradually breaching professional conduct.

Throughout these encounters, the teacher was accused of inappropriate physical behavior, such as holding the student's hand and patting her head, illustrating a troubling pattern of groomed actions that unfolded over time.

Evidence in the form of text messages portrayed the accused using affectionate and deceptive terms like “dear,” “precious,” and “daughter.” He also professed love for her and lavished compliments, which prosecutors argued was a calculated move to create emotional reliance.

Even after receiving warnings from school officials in November 2022 about his behavior, the teacher continued his interactions with the student and even suggested using disappearing message features on social media to evade scrutiny.

Deputy Principal District Judge Ong Chin Rhu found the victim’s account consistent and credible, while dismissing the accused’s assertions as unreliable and contradictory, rejecting his claim that the messages were innocent.

He has been found guilty on multiple counts, including three charges of committing indecent acts with a minor and one charge of sexual grooming, facing potential imprisonment with up to five years possible for each count.

The Ministry of Education in Singapore confirmed that the teacher was suspended in October 2023 and is no longer part of the educational system. Authorities underscored their commitment to enforce stringent actions against any personnel who breach professional ethics.

This incident underlines the critical need to protect students and uphold strong boundaries within educational contexts, illustrating the legal system's firm approach to infractions involving minors and trust violations.
