Consult Before Consuming Vitamin B12: A Neurologist's Caution

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Vitamin supplements are widely discussed today, with many individuals jumping on trends from social media without discerning their actual needs. A prime example of this is Vitamin B12. When sensations like numbness or tingling occur, the assumption is often a B12 deficiency. However, medical professionals caution that this is not always the case, and self-supplementing could pose risks.

Dr. Rahul Chawla, a neurologist trained at AIIMS and a consultant at IBS Hospital in New Delhi, recently emphasized this critical point. In his video, he noted that symptoms such as tingling or numbness can stem from various sources, and are not exclusively linked to low B12 levels. It is vital to undergo appropriate testing prior to initiating any supplementation.

Self-diagnosing can be dangerous since the underlying issue might be something entirely different, like nerve diseases, spine problems, or high glucose levels. Using supplements without identifying the actual reason could mean that a more serious condition is left unaddressed.

Dr. Chawla clarified the characteristics of true B12 deficiency. Symptoms such as fatigue, pallor, weakness, dizziness, and numbness in limbs can occur. In some cases, cognitive issues or mood fluctuations may also arise. In extreme instances, it can lead to mobility difficulties. However, he reiterates that a proper blood test is essential before taking any action.

While Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in maintaining nerve health, it doesn't necessitate universal supplementation. Using excessive B12 without genuine need might obscure other health conditions and procrastinate appropriate treatments. Hence, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable.

He advised that supplements should not be assumed to be benign just because they are easily accessible. Anything that influences bodily function should be approached with caution. Medical practitioners can recommend the right tests and dosages when appropriate, ensuring safety and avoiding errors.

His core message is simple: avoid diagnosing yourself based on online symptoms. Refrain from mimicking others and launching into supplements absent of medical guidance. A straightforward blood test can unveil the correct diagnosis and avert more significant health issues in the future.

In an era inundated with quick health solutions and viral wellness tips, Dr. Chawla's counsel serves as a vital reminder. Health choices should stem from evidence rather than fads. Always confer with a physician prior to starting any supplementation, especially for symptoms like tingling and numbness, which may have a multitude of causes.
