In a gripping semifinal match at the Japan Masters, Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen faced off against local hero Kenta Nishimoto. The contest lasted one hour and 17 minutes in Kumamoto City, ending with Nishimoto, ranked 13th globally, winning 19-21, 21-14, 12-21. This result put an end to Sen's campaign in this BWF World Tour Super 500 event.
The opening game proved to be fiercely contested. Lakshya surged ahead with an early 8-3 advantage, but Nishimoto quickly shifted gears, scoring seven consecutive points to take a slim 10-9 lead. With his aggressive smashes, Nishimoto kept pushing Lakshya, who found it hard to regain momentum. The game tightened at 18-18, but a critical drop shot by Nishimoto coupled with Lakshya's net errors saw him take the first game 19-21.
In the second game, despite falling to 1-5 early on, Lakshya displayed remarkable tenacity. He slowed the game pace and was brilliant in scoring eight points during the last nine before the break. With a mix of finesse and power, he built up a commanding 20-14 lead, ultimately securing the second game with a score of 21-14. The match was now tied at one game a piece.
The final game tilted back in Nishimoto's favor as he established an early lead of 5-2, showcasing aggressive attacking plays and exceptional body smashes. Lakshya’s attempts to respond with swift movements and strong defense fell short, as Nishimoto maintained pressure and extended his lead to 14-7 at the interval. With crucial errors from Lakshya, Nishimoto converted his match points, sealing the final game at 21-12 and his advance to the championship round.
Nishimoto's victory highlighted his skillful strategy and stamina, while Lakshya's resilience shone through during the second game; however, he struggled to uphold that level in the decisive game. The encounter was filled with long rallies, fast-paced actions, and several shifts in momentum, keeping the audience captivated throughout.
Nishimoto will now advance to the final, where he will compete against either Kodai Naraoka or Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei. On the other hand, Lakshya Sen will have to bounce back from this setback as he continues on the BWF World Tour, aiming to enhance his performance in forthcoming competitions.
Even with the loss, Lakshya Sen proved his mettle with his skill and determination. He remains a noteworthy contender in badminton, and this semifinal experience will undoubtedly contribute to his future endeavors on the circuit, showcasing his ability to challenge elite players like Nishimoto.
