Surge in China's Automobile Production and Sales in March

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In March, China's automotive sector exhibited a noteworthy recovery, experiencing considerable month-on-month growth in both production and sales.

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) revealed that automobile production hit 2.92 million units, while sales reached 2.9 million units. This signifies impressive increases of 74.4% in production and 60.6% in sales as compared to February.

The primary driver behind this growth was the robust performance of the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector. NEV production soared to 1.23 million units, with sales a bit higher at 1.25 million units, showcasing a strong consumer shift towards electric and hybrid models.

In total, the first quarter saw automobile production in China amounting to 7.04 million units, with sales slightly surpassing this figure at 7.05 million units, indicating a balanced supply-demand scenario.

During this period, NEV production was recorded at 2.97 million units, and sales reached 2.96 million units, indicating that this segment is increasingly vital to the automotive landscape.

Looking forward, industry analysts express optimism for sustained growth. Chen Shihua, the Deputy Secretary-General of CAAM, pointed out that government initiatives, such as wide-scale equipment replacement programs and consumer trade-in options, are likely to further bolster demand.

Moreover, with the upcoming Beijing Auto Show anticipated to unveil numerous new vehicles, market momentum might continue to rise, driving automobile purchases in the second quarter.
