CISA Director Faces Backlash Over Sensitive Data Uploads to AI

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The acting leader of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Madhu Gottumukkala, is facing an inquiry following allegations that he uploaded sensitive government contracting documents to the public version of ChatGPT.

Reports indicate that the documents were labeled “For Official Use Only”, which signifies they are sensitive but not classified, thus inappropriate for public distribution. CISA's automated cybersecurity systems identified the uploads in August 2025 and initiated an internal security alert.

Gottumukkala has held the position of acting director since May 2025 and was temporarily authorized to utilize ChatGPT as part of a government effort to explore AI technologies. However, the majority of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel are restricted from accessing public AI platforms due to concerns over data security.

DHS has commenced a review to assess whether the uploaded information compromised government security, though the findings of this investigation remain undisclosed.

This situation has sparked worries, as public AI platforms may retain user data to refine their systems. Conversely, DHS employs internal AI solutions like DHSChat, designed to safeguard government data within federal systems.

CISA clarified that Gottumukkala’s ChatGPT access was both limited and temporary, and that public AI tools are still prohibited for most staff. This incident has ignited a larger discussion regarding the secure use of artificial intelligence within government agencies while safeguarding sensitive information.
