Collaboration Between Abu Dhabi Biobank and AstraZeneca for Precision Medicine

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Abu Dhabi Biobank, an initiative by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi in collaboration with M42, has forged a partnership with AstraZeneca, a global leader in biopharmaceuticals, aimed at advancing precision medicine and clinical research.

This alliance merges Abu Dhabi Biobank's cutting-edge biobanking capabilities and population health data with AstraZeneca's extensive expertise in pivotal therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, respiratory, immunology, and oncology conditions. Their aim is to translate scientific insights into actionable healthcare solutions.

The two entities will collaborate on several strategic fronts, including clinical development, precision medicine, and real-world evidence generation. Their joint efforts will facilitate biomarker discovery, pharmacogenomics, and better patient stratification, enabling healthcare providers to understand diseases more deeply and tailor treatments accordingly.

Additionally, this partnership will delve into health economics, regulatory science, and emerging domains such as digital health and artificial intelligence, enhancing data-driven healthcare frameworks and accelerating the transition from research to clinical application.

Albarah ElKhani, COO of Integrated Health Solutions at M42, remarked that this collaboration signifies a united vision for the future of medicine. He emphasized that blending Abu Dhabi Biobank's population insights with AstraZeneca's scientific knowledge could pave the way for advancements in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly for Middle Eastern populations.

Sameh ElFangary, Country President for Gulf and Pakistan at AstraZeneca, stated that precision medicine should encapsulate the diversity of global patient populations. He expressed that the partnership will facilitate earlier identification of at-risk individuals, especially in complex and rare diseases, while fostering the creation of customized care pathways.

This collaboration is a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi's ambition to emerge as a global center for biomedical research and life sciences innovation. By leveraging extensive long-term population data and localized insights, the partnership seeks to hasten the journey from research findings to regulatory approval and actual clinical usage.
