Colossal Purple Star Sapphire Unveiled in Sri Lanka

Post by : Meena Hassan

In an awe-inspiring revelation, Sri Lanka's capital has introduced a massive Purple Star Sapphire, weighing 3,563 carats, thought to be the largest of its type known globally. Named the “Star of Pure Land,” this extraordinary gem is captivating the world with its remarkable size and distinctive characteristics.

This gem, perfectly round, showcases an eye-catching six-rayed asterism—creating a star-like effect when illuminated. This striking feature distinguishes it from other star sapphires, enhancing its uniqueness. Expert gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed its exceptional status, stating, “This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind, showcasing a clearly defined six-ray star.”

Unearthed in 2023 from a gem pit near Rathnapura, a town renowned as the “city of gems,” the stone was acquired along with various other precious stones. After a thorough assessment over nearly two years, its value and rarity became evident, leading to verification by two separate gemological laboratories.

The owners, opting to remain anonymous for safety, have appraised the sapphire's worth between $300 million and $400 million, as confirmed by international specialists. Sri Lankan sapphires are celebrated for their vibrant hues, clarity, and natural luster, further enhancing this gem's illustrious reputation.

Now prepared for sale, the “Star of Pure Land” is poised to become an iconic addition to the world of collectors and investors.
