Fire at Pemex Dos Bocas Refinery Successfully Contained

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dos Bocas, Mexico: A fire erupted at the Dos Bocas refinery, operated by Mexico's Pemex, but has now been contained without any reported injuries. This incident is the facility's second fire within a month, raising new alarms regarding its safety protocols.

The blaze ignited in a storage area on Thursday, specifically targeting coke materials within the Olmeca refinery. Approximately 150 emergency personnel were mobilized to extinguish the flames and avert further escalation.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the fire was restricted to a specific section of the complex and has been fully controlled. Assistance was also provided by Navy and Defense Ministry personnel alongside Pemex workers during the emergency.

Footage shared on social media depicted significant flames and thick plumes of smoke emanating from the refinery. The authenticity of these visuals has yet to be verified independently.

Pemex’s Director, Victor Rodriguez, plans to visit the site to oversee recovery efforts and evaluate any potential damage. Currently, the cause of the fire and the extent of the losses remain undisclosed.

This incident follows a tragic accident on March 17, which resulted in five fatalities due to an oil residue fire near the refinery's perimeter, exacerbating existing safety concerns.

The Dos Bocas refinery, with a construction cost of around $21 billion—far exceeding its original budget—was a key initiative of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, intended to enhance Mexico's energy independence and reduce fuel imports.

Despite its strategic goals, the refinery has faced ongoing operational hurdles since its 2024 opening and has significantly lagged behind its production targets.

As of January, it processed approximately 205,000 barrels of crude oil daily, generating over 77,000 barrels of gasoline and nearly 78,500 barrels of diesel—far below its designed capacity of 340,000 barrels per day.

This recent fire is expected to draw increased scrutiny on safety measures and operational efficiency at one of the nation’s most critical energy projects.
