The women's singles final at the Mubadala DC Open between Alex Eala and Jessica Pegula was suspended because of rain and lightning near the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington. The championship match will continue on Monday after poor weather stopped play.
At the time the match was halted, Pegula was leading 6-4, 1-2 after 55 minutes of play. Eala was serving in the second set when officials suspended the match. Neither player had faced a break point during the second set before the weather interruption.
The final was originally scheduled to begin at noon but was delayed for several hours because of continuous rain. After multiple postponements, the players finally entered the court to begin the championship match.
Pegula made the stronger start by winning the opening set 6-4 with a steady and controlled performance. She took the early advantage as the match settled into its first stage.
Eala answered well in the second set by holding her first two service games to move ahead 2-1. However, her momentum was interrupted when rain and nearby lightning forced officials to stop play and clear Stadium Court.
The 21-year-old is aiming to win the first WTA singles title of her career. Washington marks only the second tour-level singles final of her professional career.
Eala reached the championship match after a series of notable victories during the tournament. She defeated Zheng Qinwen, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, world No. 10 Elina Svitolina, and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on her way to the final.
Pegula is seeking her second Washington title. She won her first WTA singles trophy at this tournament seven years ago and is now looking to lift the championship again.
The American also has the advantage in the head-to-head record between the two players after defeating Eala in a closely contested three-set semi-final at the 2025 Miami Open.
