A catastrophic fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza shopping center has resulted in the loss of approximately 50 lives, according to officials on Wednesday, as rescue efforts persist to navigate the ruins. This incident is now deemed the deadliest fire the city has witnessed in over ten years.
The inferno erupted swiftly within the extensive mall, which contained over 1,200 small, family-operated shops that sold wedding attire, toys, kitchen supplies, and various other items. Dense smoke and fierce flames ensnared numerous shoppers and employees inside.
Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso reported that rescue workers have recovered between 20 to 25 bodies from the wreckage as of Wednesday. “These remains have been sent to hospitals for DNA identification,” he noted, emphasizing that confirming the total number of victims remains difficult. Earlier assessments had estimated the toll at 29.
Emergency personnel fought the fire for several days before finally managing to bring it under control on Tuesday. What was once a bustling marketplace has now been reduced to charred remains and rubble.
Reports indicate that at least 84 individuals are still unaccounted for in the aftermath of the blaze. Authorities are concerned that most may not have survived, suggesting that the overall death count may increase. Family members and community members have gathered at the site, lighting candles and displaying photographs of those missing as they grieve.
Shopkeepers have recounted the heartbreak of the incident. Trader Rehmat Khan shared that 18 to 20 people were in his store, including six staff members, when the fire broke out. “All of them are missing,” he lamented, highlighting the profound personal and financial ramifications of the event.
This tragedy underscores ongoing fire safety issues in Karachi’s commercial sectors. Many older marketplaces are inadequately equipped with proper fire exits, alarms, and emergency protocols, leaving individuals at great risk.
The Gul Plaza fire marks the deadliest incident in Karachi since 2012 when a blaze at an industrial site took the lives of over 260 people. Authorities have pledged to conduct investigations to ascertain the cause and evaluate whether improved safety measures could have averted this loss of life.
