Unruly Passenger Forces Delta Flight to Make Emergency Landing

Unruly Passenger Forces Delta Flight to Make Emergency Landing

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A Delta Air Lines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Texas on Wednesday (February 18) after an unruly passenger caused a disturbance mid-flight.

Delta Flight 2557 was flying from Texas to Atlanta when the incident happened shortly after takeoff. According to reports, the flight was diverted to Houston’s Hobby Airport around 17 minutes after leaving the runway.

In a radio communication with air traffic control, the pilot reported that a passenger had stood up and tried to approach the cockpit. The pilot asked officials to arrange security to meet the aircraft immediately after landing.

There were 85 passengers and five crew members onboard at the time. One passenger, Josh Lemastus, said the man acted aggressively, bumped into him, and punched him repeatedly in the head. He also said the person appeared to be screaming and behaving strangely, and many passengers believed he was not mentally stable.

The pilot confirmed that the cockpit remained secure and later informed air traffic control that the passenger was restrained in handcuffs at the back of the plane. The pilot also requested medical help for the assaulted passenger.

After the emergency landing, police, paramedics, and airport security reached the gate. Emergency vehicles escorted the aircraft to the ramp as a safety precaution.

Delta later released a statement saying the passenger approached the crew but did not make contact with or attempt to enter the flight deck. The airline said it has zero tolerance for unruly behavior and apologized to passengers for the delay.

After the situation was handled, the flight resumed and reached Atlanta about 90 minutes behind schedule.
