The driver responsible for a fatal crash in north London, which claimed the life of a teenager recently released from a Dubai prison, has confessed to his part in the incident.
On Friday, Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, 20, admitted to causing the death of 19-year-old Marcus Fakana through dangerous driving following a police chase that culminated in a tragic accident in Tottenham. Huseen also pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries to another individual in the vehicle while driving without a license or insurance.
The accident took place in the early hours of October 3 last year. Huseen was behind the wheel of a BMW carrying two other passengers when officers from the Metropolitan Police attempted to halt what they described as a “vehicle of interest” in Pretoria Road, north London. After a brief pursuit, the police lost sight of the car.
Shortly after, they discovered the BMW had collided with a lorry in The Roundway area of Tottenham, resulting in significant damage.
Marcus Fakana, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was urgently taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. Another passenger sustained severe injuries that required extensive medical attention.
Huseen appeared via video from HMP Pentonville at Wood Green Crown Court, where he conceded to causing Fakana’s death through dangerous driving and to the serious harm of the second passenger. He also admitted to driving while uninsured and without a valid license.
This case has gained additional attention due to the fact that it involves Fakana, who had only recently been released from detention in Dubai.
Just three months prior to the crash, Fakana, a Tottenham native, had been released from a UAE prison where he spent nearly a year behind bars. His arrest occurred during a family vacation in the UAE in the summer of 2024 when he was 18 and involved with a 17-year-old girl from London.
His imprisonment drew considerable media interest in the UK, and he was eventually released after receiving a royal pardon from Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His family had hoped this would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Tragically, however, his life was cut short in a matter of moments in a London street.
Prosecutors indicated that Huseen was trying to evade police when the collision happened. Although officers had lost brief sight of the BMW, they quickly arrived at the damaged scene to find the vehicle mangled and its passengers in grave condition.
Following the hearing, Huseen was remanded into custody, with a sentencing date expected to be announced at a subsequent hearing on February 27.
This incident has reignited discussions about stricter measures against reckless driving and police pursuits, especially in residential neighborhoods throughout the capital.
For the family of Fakana, this incident closes a heartbreaking chapter in what had seemed to take a turn towards hope. After enduring a year in a foreign prison and finally returning home, his life was tragically taken in an instant.
