7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Southern Philippines

Post by : Shweta

A severe earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale rocked the southern Philippines on Monday, resulting in a death toll of at least 35 and injuring over 200 individuals. Most casualties stemmed from collapsed structures, debris, and a significant landslide related to the quake. Initial tsunami alerts were issued across several nations but were later rescinded.

The quake struck at 7:37 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located offshore near Mindanao, the country's second-largest island. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology revealed that the quake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers, situated southwest of Maasim in Sarangani province.

General Santos city faced substantial devastation, with numerous buildings either collapsing or suffering severe damage. Rescue teams have been deployed as there is concern for individuals potentially trapped in the wreckage of supermarkets, warehouses, and educational facilities. Reports indicate at least four individuals remain unaccounted for.

In Sarangani, a landslide in the Glan municipality led to the deaths of 13 residents, alongside four additional fatalities elsewhere in the province. Other reports indicate lives lost in South Cotabato, Davao Occidental, and Balut Island due to structural failures and falling debris.

This earthquake is noted as the most powerful to strike the Philippines in 2023, with seismologists documenting over 200 aftershocks. Authorities have urged residents to stay away from compromised homes until they are deemed safe, as ongoing seismic activity may lead to further collapses.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has instructed local and national disaster response teams to act swiftly. Classes in the affected regions have been halted while emergency services evaluate damages and assist displaced residents. The president affirmed that the national government will fully back the communities impacted by this tragedy.

The earthquake has caused significant disruptions to daily life and transportation. General Santos International Airport has temporarily ceased operations, leading to the cancellation of 17 domestic flights. Damage evaluations are in progress across various provinces as officials aim to restore regular services.

The tremor was felt as far as Malaysia's Sabah state. Tsunami waves were recorded in multiple areas, including Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat provinces, where they reached heights of about one meter. Indonesia's Sulawesi reported waves of 83 centimeters. However, tsunami warnings were lifted later that day as experts assessed the threat had diminished.

Minor coastal destruction was observed, particularly in Zamboanga del Sur province, where homes on stilts suffered damage from elevated sea levels post-earthquake. Monitoring continues in coastal regions for any additional risks.

The international community has extended support to the Philippines amidst ongoing rescue and relief operations. The United States is in coordination with Manila and ready to assist, while France, Japan, and New Zealand have also expressed their willingness to provide aid.

Positioned along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines frequently faces natural disasters, with earthquakes and volcanic activity being common. The country additionally grapples with approximately 20 tropical storms and typhoons annually.

Search and rescue missions persist as authorities strive to evaluate damage comprehensively. The casualty count may rise as teams reach more remote areas and inspect destroyed properties. Recovery initiatives are anticipated to proceed over the coming days as displaced individuals begin their journeys to rebuild.
