Elderly Man Stopped at Tenerife Airport with Deceased Spouse

Post by : Meena Hassan

An 80-year-old man faced detention at Tenerife South Airport in Spain while attempting to board a plane accompanied by his deceased wife, who was in a wheelchair. This extraordinary incident triggered alarms among airport security, prompting an official investigation by local authorities.

During routine security checks, personnel observed that the woman was completely unresponsive and exhibited a notably low body temperature. Authorities later confirmed she had passed away several hours before the couple attempted to board the flight.

Airport staff quickly notified relevant parties, activating emergency procedures to manage the situation. Security teams, Civil Guard members, and forensic experts swiftly responded to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

The elderly man informed officials that his wife had died at the airport, alleging that the airport's facilities contributed to her death. Consequently, he was placed under police detention as investigators assessed if any criminal charges were warranted.

This case has raised broader concerns regarding the efficacy of airport screening protocols. Such incidents are not unprecedented; a notable case in late 2025 involved a British family trying to board a flight with a deceased relative in a similar manner, although some details regarding that incident were later contested by airline representatives.

An airport employee reported that a security guard noticed the woman's cold hand and lack of breathing when he took charge of the wheelchair from the man, which immediately alerted supervisors and set emergency actions in motion.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if any criminal liability exists in this tragic case.

This incident adds to a series of recent events, including a case where an elderly woman passed away mid-flight, challenging previous assertions that she had boarded the aircraft already deceased.
