At the heart of Emirati culture lies a deep-rooted curiosity, driving generations to explore the vastness of land, sea, and tradition. Today, this ethos flourishes in the realm of photography, where Emirati artists intertwine scientific concepts, nature, and emotions to craft striking visual stories.
During the 10th Xposure International Photography Festival, three Emirati photographers will showcase distinctive works that delve into astronomy, micro-science, and conceptual artistry. Their unique insights reflect a generation deftly merging tradition with modern innovation.
Capturing the Cosmos: Yousuf Al Qasimi
Yousuf Al Qasimi, renowned for his night-sky photography, is also a member of the Emirates Astronomical Society. He showcases stunning visuals of nebulae, star clusters, and meteor showers, rekindling the human spirit’s connection to the cosmos. Al Qasimi further captures the raw power of nature through extreme weather photography. His exhibit, The Sky – Within and Beyond at the Nature zone, presents a mesmerizing look at the sky's beauty and ferocity.
Unveiling Microscopic Wonders: Rashed Alsumaiti
Rashed Alsumaiti invites viewers into hidden realms with his advanced micro-photography techniques. Transforming everyday substances such as salt and vitamin C crystals into abstract imagery, his exhibit, Dancing Crystals at the Fine Art and Creative Expression zone, artfully blurs the lines between artistic expression and scientific exploration. Beginning his journey with landscape photography in 2009, Alsumaiti continues to unveil the intricacies of nature's details, constantly pushing the boundaries of scale and perspective.
Exploring Emotional Landscapes: Ghada Ahmed Al Qasimi
Through her lens, Ghada Ahmed Al Qasimi delves into themes of memory, stillness, and complex emotions. Her series, Silence, located in the Fine Art zone, encourages introspection through its delicate composition and themes of presence and absence. Her works reflect the contemplative essence of contemporary Emirati artistry by leaving interpretations open to the viewer.
A New Wave of Emirati Creativity
Collectively, these photographers represent a dynamic shift in culture where heritage inspires creativity and a scientific approach informs artistic practice. The Xposure 2026 festival, themed A Decade of Visual Storytelling, takes place from January 29 through February 4 at Aljada, Sharjah, providing a stage for Emirati and international photographers to engage in visual conversations.
