In a historic initiative, the European Union has launched its most extensive wildfire preparedness effort by deploying 777 firefighters from 14 member countries to combat heightened wildfire threats expected during the 2025 fire season.
Utilizing the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, these firefighters are strategically stationed in high-risk zones across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. The European Commission notes that this is the highest participation level since the program's inception in 2022.
To bolster emergency response capabilities, the EU has also readied 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters, all part of the EU fleet. These assets can be quickly dispatched to assist nations dealing with severe wildfire crises.
As wildfire seasons in Europe extend longer, starting earlier and resulting in more devastation, the European Commission emphasizes the importance of additional personnel, equipment, and expertise to provide immediate aid to national firefighting services during peak threat periods.
Throughout the wildfire season, the EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre will function around the clock to oversee wildfire threats, coordinate aid, and guide deployment strategies. The centre will utilize meteorological data and scientific insights to enhance tracking and response measures.
Monitoring efforts will be further supported by wildfire experts from EU member states and partner nations, as well as specialists collaborating through the Commission's partnerships with scientific institutions.
Looking to the future, the European Union plans to establish a new regional firefighting station in Cyprus by 2026, aimed at reinforcing wildfire readiness and response mechanisms throughout Europe and the southern Mediterranean.
These initiatives demonstrate the EU's ongoing commitment to improving collaboration, preparedness, and swift responses as wildfire threats intensify across the continent.
