Brussels, Belgium — September 17, 2026: European stock markets moved higher on Thursday as declining crude oil prices helped improve investor sentiment, while selling pressure in global government bonds temporarily eased. Investors were also assessing the latest interest rate signals from the United States Federal Reserve and looking ahead to the Bank of England’s monetary policy decision.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index gained 0.5 percent to 640.37 points, with most major regional markets trading in positive territory. Germany’s DAX index also advanced by 0.5 percent, reflecting a modest improvement in market sentiment across Europe.

Travel-related companies were among the stronger performers during the session. The European travel sector index increased 0.8 percent as lower oil prices supported expectations for reduced fuel-related costs. Technology stocks also gained 0.8 percent, helped by advances in companies including ASML and Nemetschek.
European energy stocks moved in the opposite direction as crude oil prices continued to decline for a second consecutive session. The European energy sector index fell 0.2 percent, reflecting the pressure that lower oil prices can place on companies whose revenues are closely linked to energy markets.
Several individual companies recorded significant movements. Sodexo shares gained 3.2 percent after JPMorgan upgraded its rating on the French catering and facilities management company from neutral to overweight. In contrast, shares of German industrial services group Bilfinger dropped 24.2 percent after the company reduced its 2026 forecast for the second time.
Investors were also watching the Bank of England, which was widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged at its September 17 meeting. The decision was being closely monitored for indications about the central bank’s approach to inflation, economic growth and future monetary policy.
The US Federal Reserve raised its policy rate by 25 basis points in a widely anticipated decision on Wednesday, according to the supplied market report. The move and the Fed’s guidance on future policy remained important for global financial markets. Government bond yields were relatively stable early Thursday after a period of selling pressure, giving investors some temporary relief across international fixed-income markets.
The combination of lower oil prices, steadier bond markets and expectations surrounding central-bank policy remained central to investor attention. European equities continued to show modest gains, while movements in energy prices, interest rates and government bond yields were expected to remain important factors for financial markets in the days ahead.
