Austrian director Sandra Wollner has triumphantly claimed the top award in the esteemed Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival for her poignant family drama Everytime. The accolade was announced during the awards ceremony, where the film was lauded for its nuanced storytelling and emotional resonance.
The Un Certain Regard category is renowned as one of Cannes' most prestigious, showcasing significant works beyond the main competition. This section has historically launched the careers of numerous noteworthy directors worldwide.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Wollner emphasized the necessity of unique, personal narratives in filmmaking, especially in an age where artificial intelligence is on the rise. She cautioned against generic creative outputs and highlighted the significance of authentic and emotionally rich storytelling.
Critics have commended Everytime for its intricate portrayal of grief and healing, particularly suited to families coping with sudden loss. ScreenDaily noted the film as a meticulously crafted narrative that profoundly resonates with viewers.
Additionally, other international films received accolades at the ceremony, including Elephants in The Fog, marking a milestone as the first Nepali film to win the jury prize in the Un Certain Regard section. Director Abinash Bikram Shah celebrated this historic achievement with his cast and crew.
The animated film Iron Boy was awarded the special jury prize, while the best actress accolade went to actresses Marina de Tavira, Daniela Marin Navarro, and Mariangel Villegas for their performances in Forever Your Maternal Animal.
Bradley Fiomona Dembeasset took home the title of best actor for his role in Congo Boy, a story depicting a teenager’s musical aspirations amidst the turmoil in the Central African Republic.
Film analysts suggest that this year’s Un Certain Regard lineup reflected an enriching global diversity, featuring filmmakers from various continents presenting deeply personal and socially pertinent narratives on the world stage.
